Shanghai Circle Hospital

Private Healthcare for HNW Patients

One Space was commissioned to work with Circle Health Group, a UK healthcare network, to design a new private hospital at Taiyuan Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai, China, catering to this area’s high net worth clientele.

The site is a pre-existing cluster of heritage buildings (formerly the Rujin Hotel) comprising a rambling, loosely interconnected set of unaligned floorplates, from Basement to Ground to Upper Level. These contorted, irregular building structures, alongside the inevitable constraints imposed by their protected status, presented the most significant design challenge.

Whilst the necessary medical services design expertise came directly from the client, One Space was entrusted with planning a holistic customer experience, by creating a “5-Star Hotel” ambience and service model that included VIP Suites, Concierge Services, Outpatient Treatment Rooms, a Restaurant, a VIP Dining Room and a Café featuring a large outdoor terrace on the Upper Level.

A notable logistical challenge was the insertion of a multi-tonne, large-dimension MRI machine into the Basement Diagnostics Centre, and we embraced this requirement by introducing a large, removable rooflight to admit daylight into an otherwise windowless space.

The final design (ultimately unexecuted) communicates a prestigious, world-class healthcare facility that respects and reinforces the quiet elegance of this urban heritage site.
