Happy Valley Private Residence

Everything in its Place

The project is for a relatively compact living space of about 550 sq ft with a roof terrace of the same size. Because the owners have lots of ‘stuff’, but nevertheless wanted a clutter-free home, we came fairly quickly to the design concept of ‘Everything in its Place’. We also challenged the trendy notion that a relatively modest space is best left undivided as a ‘studio flat’, by doing quite the opposite here.

There are virtually no ‘walls’ in the conventional sense. Instead, the home is divided loosely into rooms by surprisingly ample storage cabinets that strategically control views and vantage points. In contrast to a studio flat, this arrangement dramatically extends one’s journey by defining a theatrical sequence of perceptions and experiences. One space flows into another, and then another, and so on – seamlessly, but with punctuations, surprises and events along the way – manipulating one’s memory to create the impression that this home is much bigger than it actually is.

In contrast, only the toilet cubical at the plan’s hub is opaque, substantial and immutable, articulated as a luxuriously polished granite block that resembles black sticky rice.

Conceptually, this interior is working very hard, whilst appearing to be very relaxed, expansive and generous – even tranquil and imperturbable.
