Bank of China | A New Retail Banking Concept

Reinvigorating A Brand Through Architectural Design

Bank of China HK came to One Space for a fresh take on their soon-to-be-launched concept branch. The challenge was to invigorate the design without compromising the brand DNA. The end-result was a refreshed brand identity, and a more open and accessible customer service model.

This prototype branch includes three floors of banking and a major façade re-design. Our 3-dimensional facade concept, inspired by bamboo in Chinese art, delivers a modern reinterpretation of BOC’s trusted China and Hong Kong heritage. The street-facing entrance hall accommodates events, alongside 24-hour banking. A sculptural staircase links the street level entrance hall to the banking floors above. Front-line staff are positioned in a more cordial relationship to customers, whilst in the Wealth Management Centre, we created a platform that engages Relationship Managers and clients in a more relaxed setting.

To start, the self-illuminated street frontage of the centre made it instantly recognisable whilst reinterpreting the bank’s red and white brand colours. To enhance its visual identity, the bank’s corporate colours were enlivened with accents of aqua blue throughout the branch. The bright, modern and welcoming interior was complemented by warm leather, vibrant fabrics, white polished floors and state-of-the-art, eco-friendly LED lighting to reduce carbon footprint. Re-conceptualised Customer Engagement Rooms were built to bring together Relationship Managers and their customers while the Cash Counters were designed to encourage more cordial relationships with customers, facilitating appropriate eye contact and enhanced security.
