Air Hongkong’s senior management approached One Space in 2015 to design and deliver a 1,400 sq foot aircrew lounge within the airside area of HK International Airport at Chek Lap Kok.
In order to serve the wide range of aircrew needs as they transited on and off duty and rested in between flights, the modestly sized space needed to accommodate several distinctly different facilities, all organised to avoid disrupting each other through the course of various flight operations.
We organised the floorplate, which boasts dramatic views across the aircraft apron & taxiways, in zones segueing from well-lighted to somnolent, and from active to quiet. Because this facility is used mostly at late-night hours, our lighting design played a key role in helping keep pilots alert in some rooms whilst affording sleep or rest in others.
Our highly compact floor plan layout includes 6 no. private, sound-proofed, highly tailored bunkrooms; washrooms and showers; a pantry; a briefing & flight-prep room; mailboxes; a casual conversation area, and a rest area overlooking the tarmac.
The new lounge has been operational since 2016, garnering unanimously positive feedback from the pilots and others. Air Hongkong’s COO later commended our design team for “listening well” to their requirements and for our “innovative use of the limited space”.
